The murder of travel vlogger Gabby Petito is the subject of a Netflix documentary series.
American Murder: Gabby Petito documents the events leading up to Gabby’s death, who was killed by her fiance, Brian Laundrie, in August 2021 in Wyoming while the couple were on a road trip across the US.
Following Gabby’s disappearance, Brian raised suspicion with police when he drove the couple’s van from Wyoming to his parents house in Florida. Brian, along with his parents Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, all refused to cooperate with police to discuss Gabby’s whereabouts. On September 13, Brian left his home and was reported missing four days later.
Gabby’s body was found on September 19, 2021 in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. She was found to have been killed by blunt force injuries to her head and neck, and manual strangulation.
After an arrest warrant was issued for Brian, who was still missing, his remains were found a month later on October 20 in Florida’s Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, alongside a note where he admitted to killing Gabby. A medical examiner ruled Brian had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Where are Brian Laundrie’s parents and sister now?

Following the Gabby and Brian’s death, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie have largely stayed out of the limelight. They have faced no criminal charges.
Gabby’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2022 against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, along with their attorney, claiming they knew their daughter was dead before she was found, and lied to them and the public. The Laundries denied these allegations, and the lawsuit was settled in February 2024.
In a statement at the time, Gabby’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, said: “All parties reluctantly agreed in order to avoid further legal expenses and prolonged personal conflict. Our hope is to close this chapter of our lives to allow us to move on and continue to honour the legacy of our beautiful daughter, Gabby.”
Brian’s sister, Cassie, meanwhile appears to have an Instagram account where she regularly posts about suicide prevention. In a post from February 2025, Cassie claimed she hasn’t had any contact with her parents for “almost two years”.
Have the Laundries said anything about the Netflix documentary?

The Laundrie family attorney, Steven Bertolino, released a statement in response to the Netflix series a few weeks after it debuted, claiming it contained “many inaccuracies” and “incorrect juxtapositions”.
The statement (via Today) reads: “The documentary was what we expected. One perspective depicted as the ‘truth’ as seen through their lens. Similar to Republicans and Democrats fighting it out lately. Each side believes their perspective is correct. Hard to see through the lens of the other with all the noise and distrust.
“The documentary contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact — perhaps deliberate to capture their ‘truth’, perhaps due to simple error.
“We all know Brian took Gabby’s life and Brian then took his own as well. Let the parents of both Gabby and Brian mourn and remember them in peace.”
