The Nigeria Police Force has given reasons for the arrest of activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, saying the move was to ensure fairness and balance in the prosecution of those involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja.

Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known on Thursday while speaking with journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to him, Sowore’s arrest followed reports that he allegedly led protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration held in solidarity with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

“Mr. Sowore was arrested to ensure that justice is evenly applied to everyone involved in the protest,” Hundeyin explained.
“The Police will not treat anyone differently, regardless of their status or political affiliation. Everyone connected to the incident will face the law appropriately.”

He added that the Police remain committed to maintaining peace and enforcing the law while protecting citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, provided such gatherings do not breach public order or security.
