Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the selection of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, marking the end of a two-year succession process following the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the choice was made after “thorough consultations and divinations.”

According to Oyelade, the Oyomesi (the kingmakers of Oyo) recommended Prince Owoade, and Governor Makinde gave his approval.

“This decision reflects a careful and transparent process. Prince Owoade’s emergence has brought an end to the socio-legal disputes that arose since the passing of the late Alaafin,” Oyelade said.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, described the announcement as a “momentous occasion” and called on all citizens to unite in support of the new monarch. “This is a time for celebration and renewed hope for our people,” Ojo said.

“We pray that the reign of His Royal Majesty, Prince Abimbola Owoade, will bring peace, prosperity, and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom.”

The selection of Prince Owoade ends months of anticipation and legal wrangling over who would ascend the throne of one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional institutions. His coronation is expected to uphold the cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom and strengthen its historical significance in Yoruba land.

Governor Makinde’s administration emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation as the state begins this new chapter. “This is not just a win for Oyo Kingdom but for the entire state,” Oyelade added.

As the new Alaafin prepares to take on the responsibilities of his office, citizens of Oyo are optimistic about a reign that will honor the legacy of his predecessors while ushering in a new era of growth and stability.
