A chaotic scene unfolded at the Magistrate Court in Abeokuta on Monday, June 5, 2023, as a large group of armed individuals, numbering over 100, stormed the premises.
Their intention was to intimidate opposition party members who had gathered at the tribunal, preventing them from entering the court.
The Ogun state governorship tribunal holds significant importance as it aims to determine the true winner of the March 18 governorship election.
Incumbent Dapo Abiodun, who was declared the winner, is currently facing a challenge from Ladi Adebutu, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Eyewitnesses recounted a harrowing scene, where the presence of security officers failed to deter the aggressive thugs. With sticks and other harmful objects in hand, they unleashed their attacks on anyone in their path, including journalists and party supporters.
A policeman who pleaded annonymity said, “There is nothing we can do, we can’t arrest them. Everything about Ogun is always different.”
According to an interview with a member of the PDP following the attack, he expressed that he suffered the loss of his phone, money, and other valuable possessions while enduring physical assault.
At the time of compiling this report, it has been observed that PDP members have evacuated the court premises in order to evade additional attacks.
