President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly relieved Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of his duties in what appears to be a significant reshuffle within Nigeria’s security leadership.
According to a report by Premium Times, the Police Chief was directed to step aside during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
Sources familiar with the development indicate that Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu is poised to assume the role, with arrangements already underway for a formal handover ceremony.
Although there has been no official statement from the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force, insiders say final preparations for the leadership transition are currently being concluded.
Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was subsequently confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
His exit is expected to trigger further changes within the upper ranks of the Nigeria Police Force as the new leadership takes charge.
