The Ondo State Police Command has arrested six men accused of posing as pastors to allegedly stage fake miracles and defraud unsuspecting residents of Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed the development in a statement issued Thursday in Akure.

According to him, the suspects; identified as Fadahunsi, Kolade, Tijani, Iyanuoluwa, Arijesulola and Ademola, were apprehended during a coordinated security operation on February 16.

Jimoh said the operation was carried out by the command’s tactical teams in collaboration with Community Safety Officers (CSOs), following credible intelligence about the activities of a suspected fraud syndicate operating in Idanre and surrounding communities.

“The arrest followed credible information about the activities of a suspected fraud syndicate operating within Idanre and its environs,” he said.

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects allegedly posed as pastors and religious leaders, staging fake miracles and spiritual interventions to win the confidence of their victims.

“The suspects allegedly exploited the faith, emotions and vulnerabilities of individuals by promising divine solutions to financial difficulties, health challenges and other personal problems,” Jimoh stated.

He added that the group operated in a coordinated manner, with members assigned specific roles to create what he described as “a convincing and structured façade of legitimacy.”

“The suspects only defrauded their victims through various forms of obtaining by false pretence and related scams,” he said.

The police spokesperson noted that investigations were ongoing to determine the total number of victims, assess the financial magnitude of the alleged fraud, and identify possible accomplices who may still be at large.

“All suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation,” Jimoh added.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to individuals who use religion or claims of miracles as a cover for criminal activities.

“Residents are advised to verify claims, be wary of suspicious financial demands, and promptly report any dubious gatherings or activities to the nearest police station,” he said.

Reaffirming the command’s commitment to public safety, Jimoh stressed that the police would continue sustained intelligence gathering and community partnership to rid the state of criminal elements.

“Through sustained intelligence gathering, community partnership and strategic operations, the command will continue to ensure the safety and protection of lives and property across the state,” he assured.
