Tension escalated on Thursday at the Fagba Railway Corridor in Lagos after suspected hoodlums launched a coordinated attack on operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce, sparking chaos and disrupting movement in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident began when taskforce officials moved in to carry out an enforcement operation aimed at clearing illegal activities and apprehending suspected offenders around the railway corridor. The operation was met with fierce resistance from a group of street urchins, popularly known as “area boys,” who reportedly mobilised and confronted the officers.
In a dramatic escalation, the attackers allegedly set parts of the railway infrastructure ablaze, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and forcing commuters and residents to flee for safety. The fire caused panic across the corridor, with bystanders scrambling to avoid being caught in the violence.
Sources said the miscreants used stones, sticks, and other makeshift weapons to repel the taskforce officials, creating a tense standoff that lasted for some time. Law enforcement officers were forced to retreat temporarily before reinforcements arrived to restore order.
The incident disrupted activities along the corridor, a key transit route within the state, and raised concerns over public safety and the protection of critical infrastructure. Some traders in the vicinity hurriedly shut down their businesses, while commuters were stranded as movement became restricted.
Officials have yet to confirm the extent of damage to the railway or whether there were casualties, but authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the attack. Security presence in the area has since been reinforced to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Residents have called for sustained security patrols and proactive measures to curb the activities of street gangs in the area, warning that such incidents could undermine ongoing efforts to maintain order and protect public assets.
