A South African court has sentenced opposition leader Julius Malema to five years in prison for discharging a rifle during a political rally in 2018.

The ruling marks a significant legal setback for the controversial politician, who has remained a prominent and polarising figure in South Africa’s political landscape.

According to court findings, Malema was found guilty of unlawfully firing the weapon at the public gathering, an act deemed to have violated firearm regulations and public safety laws.

Reacting to the judgment, Malema’s legal team said they would challenge the conviction and sentence without delay. “We will be filing an appeal immediately,” one of his lawyers stated, expressing confidence that the ruling would be overturned.

The case has drawn widespread attention across South Africa, with supporters and critics closely monitoring developments, as the appeal process is expected to determine the next phase of the high-profile matter.
