Nigerian passport holders now have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to at least 44 countries worldwide, according to the latest Henley Passport Index 2026, marking a significant boost for citizens seeking easier international travel.
The index shows that Nigerian travellers can enter these destinations either without a visa, through a visa-on-arrival arrangement at no extra cost, or via a straightforward e-visa process, cutting across Africa, the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
“This is a welcome development for Nigerians who have long grappled with cumbersome visa processes and outright rejections from certain destinations,” a Lagos-based travel consultant said, reacting to the latest ranking. “It shows that diplomatic engagement and bilateral agreements are gradually paying off, even if there is still a long way to go before Nigeria climbs significantly on the global passport index.”
Countries offering Nigerians the most immediate access, without any visa requirement, include Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Togo, Chad, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Liberia, Madagascar’s regional neighbours, Mauritius, Mozambique, and Seychelles on the African continent.
Beyond Africa, Nigerians can also travel visa-free to several Caribbean and Pacific nations, including Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Fiji, Kiribati, Micronesia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands, alongside Lebanon in the Middle East and Cape Verde Islands off the West African coast.
For destinations requiring a visa on arrival, the list includes Burundi, Cambodia, the Comoro Islands, Iran, Madagascar, the Maldives, Niue, Palau Islands, and Samoa — all accessible without the need for pre-departure visa applications.
“Visa-on-arrival policies remain one of the fastest-growing trends among countries courting Nigerian and African tourists,” the consultant added. “It reduces the bureaucratic bottleneck and, in many cases, boosts tourism revenue for host nations.”
Timor-Leste rounds out the list of countries offering visa-on-arrival access to Nigerian citizens.

Travel analysts note that while the number represents progress, Nigeria’s passport still ranks relatively low globally, underscoring the need for continued diplomatic and economic reforms to unlock access to more high-value destinations, including much of Europe and North America.
