In a first for Nigerian medicine, Redeemer’s Health Village has successfully carried out a tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon operating on a patient located in an entirely different city.
The landmark procedure took place on September 19, a collaborative effort between Redeemer’s Health Village, RoboMed Global, and Nisa Premier Hospital.
Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a professor of Urology and Transplantation, controlled the robotic console from Redeemer’s Health Village, while the patient lay on the operating table at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, several hundred kilometres away.
Over the course of roughly three hours, the surgical team removed a kidney compromised by a cancerous tumour. The patient has since been reported to be in good condition.
Redeemer’s Health Village has hailed the operation as the first telesurgery performed anywhere in West Africa, a milestone it says signals a new era of remote access to advanced surgical care.
Reacting to the achievement, Professor Ekwenna-Davis said, “Distance should never decide who receives safe surgery.”
With the backing of RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital, the successful operation cements Redeemer’s Health Village as a pioneer of robotic-assisted, cross-city surgery in Nigeria — a development that could reshape how specialist care reaches patients outside major urban centres.
