Abuja, Nigeria – The campaign for Amazing Grace Ike to become the next chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has gained momentum with the constitution of a Credentials Committee made up of individuals of integrity, entrusted with managing the forthcoming elections.
The formation of the committee is seen as a pivotal step towards ensuring a fair and transparent process, boosting confidence among her supporters.
It would be recalled that the Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen – led leadership of the FCT Council had almost plunged the council into crisis when it sought to impose members of the credentials committee on Congress with a pre-determined agenda to disqualify Grace Ike. Dr Lemmy Ughegbe, a prominent voice in the campaign, welcomed the development, but urged supporters to remain humble and strategic.
While expressing confidence in Ike’s candidacy, he emphasised the need to avoid overconfidence. “Though we believe in the quality of our candidate, this is not the time to be boastful or alienate potential supporters. Every word and action matters as we build a united front,” Ughegbe stated.
Ughegbe also extended an olive branch to those who may be dealing with the psychological aftermath of their unsuccessful efforts to block Ike’s progress. “We must allow those nursing the PTSD of defeat to recover and heal, if they so wish,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of a conciliatory approach.
He urged supporters to use thoughtful and inclusive language that could win over erstwhile opponents. “Even those who didn’t support us initially can still be persuaded to join. It’s through understanding and grace that we can foster unity,” he added.
With the December 4, 2024, elections on the horizon, the campaign remains focused on delivering a new era of leadership for the NUJ FCT Council. Supporters have been encouraged to act with discipline, knowing that unity and careful strategy are essential for achieving their goal.
“As we move forward with One Voice, we must stay committed to the future we envision. This is not just about winning—it’s about building bridges and creating a stronger NUJ,” Ughegbe concluded.
The NUJ FCT Council is poised for renewal, with a shared commitment to fairness, justice, and progress guiding the campaign into the crucial final stretch.
