The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emphasizes the necessity of a genuine coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 Presidential candidate, proposed a merger during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, aiming to establish a robust opposition capable of displacing the APC in 2027.

Atiku cautioned against Nigeria transforming into a one-party state under the APC’s influence, stating, “If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and the consequences will affect generations yet unborn.”

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP Deputy Publicity Secretary, asserted in an interview with PUNCH that Atiku’s call aims to safeguard Nigeria’s future. Abdullahi accused the APC of impoverishing Nigerians, emphasizing that only a genuine coalition could remove the President Bola Tinubu-led APC administration.

Abdullahi emphasized, “We believe only a merger or coming together of all opposition political parties will produce a better result. So there is a need for other political parties to understand that it will be difficult to defeat the All Progressives Congress without a merger.”

Timothy Osadolor, PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, highlighted the importance of opposition parties collaborating with the people for effective dislodgment of the ruling party.
