The Delta State Governor, Elder Sherriff Oborevwori has officially declared open the 18th edition of the Nigerian Red Cross Society’s International Youth Camp which is holding at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Training School in Agbor, Delta State.
Formally opening the gathering of young Red Crossers, the Governor who was ably represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Barrister Harry Trakiriowei remarked that the Delta State Government had always thrown in its lot with the youth.
“Here in Delta State we recognize the important role that education plays in shaping the youth to make enduring impact in the world. This is why as soon as I took office as Governor of Delta State, I ordered State owned universities and other tertiary institutions to lower the fees that they charge students.”
The Executive Governor then went on to outline at least 4 more initiatives targeted at creating opportunities for young people both in the formal and informal sector In his message, the Commandant of the FRSC Training School Agbor, Oludare Ogunjobi noted that the Red Cross and the Federal Road Safety Corps had a good history and had been partners for a long time.
The National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga commended the dedication of the youth participants and recognized the pivotal role they play in shaping the future of humanitarian efforts in Nigeria.
He extended special thanks to Mr. Sidney Osawaru, the National Youth Adviser, for his tireless efforts in organizing the camp to international standards.
The President also acknowledged the support from NRCS branches across Nigeria, with participants traveling from distant states like Zamfara, Borno, Rivers, Lagos, and Kano.
Prince Adeaga also expressed gratitude to the Federal Road Safety Corps for hosting the camp and welcomed delegates from the Seychelles, Mozambique, Uganda and Kenyan Red Cross Societies, encouraging them to share their experiences of Nigerian hospitality upon returning home. Highlighting the significance of the event, Prince Adeaga emphasized that the youth are not just attendees but key members of a global humanitarian movement.
He outlined the NRCS’s commitment to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Unified Plan 2024, focusing on four pillars: Empowerment, Collaboration, Sustainability and Inclusivity.
He urged the youth to play active roles in their communities and ensure that their efforts are sustainable and inclusive.
