The Department of State Services (DSS) has paid an extra ₦10 million to a Jos-based businessman who was accidentally shot by its operatives in 2016 during a search for a suspect.
A court had initially ordered the DSS to compensate the victim with ₦10 million, but in an unexpected act of goodwill, DSS Director General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi not only complied with the ruling but also doubled the payment.
“The DG personally intervened to ensure justice was done beyond what the court mandated,” a DSS source disclosed. “This is about restoring dignity and providing necessary support.”
Beyond financial compensation, the DSS has taken responsibility for the victim’s medical treatment, transferring him to its medical facility for specialized care to aid his recovery.
“Apart from the compensation, the victim has been officially integrated into the DSS medical care system to assess his condition and provide necessary treatment,” the source added.
The agency’s medical team is reportedly focused on rehabilitating the businessman and working to restore mobility in his affected limbs. Following Ramadan, he is expected to resume intensive medical treatment.
The businessman expressed gratitude for the gesture. “May Allah bless the DSS DG for his kindness. It was my destiny to suffer this accident, but when I reflect on the years of hardship, I can only be grateful to Allah and to everyone who stood by me, including my lawyer.”
His lawyer, Mr. Idris, who represented him pro bono, praised the DSS for its rare act of accountability and compassion.
“This is a landmark achievement that strengthens my confidence in the judicial system,” Idris stated.
In a letter of appreciation to the DSS DG, the lawyer commended the agency’s commitment to justice and human dignity, expressing hope
