The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning against former Deputy Governor Comr. Philip Shaibu, accusing him of impersonating the current officeholder.
According to a statement released by the government, Shaibu has been engaging in correspondence with various institutions both within and outside the state, falsely presenting himself as the Deputy Governor.
“This matter is serious and we want to make it absolutely clear that Philip Shaibu is no longer the Deputy Governor of Edo State,” said Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Honorable Commissioner for Communication and Orientation. “Any communication from him claiming such a position should be disregarded as fraudulent.”
The controversy surrounding Shaibu’s status is currently under judicial review. The State Government and the Edo House of Assembly have both filed motions challenging a recent court ruling by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, which purportedly reinstated Shaibu. A court hearing to address these motions is scheduled for September 24, 2024.
Lawyers representing the State Government and the Edo House of Assembly, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, and Ken Mozia, SAN, respectively, have requested a stay of execution of the reinstatement and sought a suspension of the judgment. They are also seeking a restraining order against Shaibu to prevent him from performing any official duties or attending functions as Deputy Governor.
As it stands, the government affirms that Omobayo Marvelous Godwins remains the legitimate Deputy Governor.
“Any interaction with Philip Shaibu in his alleged capacity as Deputy Governor is considered an act of impersonation,” Nehikhare added. “We urge the public and organizations to be cautious.”
The government has also alerted security agencies to the potential for unrest and urged them to hold Shaibu accountable for any disruptions that may arise from his actions.
