The relief experienced by former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, might be short-lived as the Federal Government has once again revised the charges against him.
The new accusations involve forgery, conferring corrupt advantage, and criminal breach of trust, among other offenses. This development follows Emefiele’s initial arraignment on six counts related to procurement irregularities in awarding a contract to April 1616 Investment Limited two months prior.
Initially charged in August 2023 alongside Sa’adatu Yaro and the company for violating the Procurement Act during vehicle purchases, the charges were amended in November, excluding co-defendants and reducing the counts against Emefiele to six.
Despite pleading not guilty, he was granted bail on November 22, 2023, by Justice Hamza Muazu, with conditions including a N300 million bond, two sureties with property in Abuja’s Maitama district, surrender of travel documents, and restricted movement within the city.
