Ibrahim Lamorde, former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. Lamorde died in Egypt, where he had traveled for medical treatment, a close associate told PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday morning.
Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police in 1986 and retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. He served as EFCC chairman from 2011 to 2015.
According to his profile on the EFCC website, Lamorde was the third Executive Chairman of the Commission. He was appointed acting chairman on November 3, 2011, following the removal of Farida Waziri by President Goodluck Jonathan. He was confirmed as the third substantive chairman by the Senate on February 15, 2012.Lamorde attended Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1984. When the EFCC was established in 2003, Lamorde became the pioneer Director of Operations.
In December 2007, he became Acting Chairman until June 2008, when Mrs. Waziri was appointed and confirmed as Chairperson. Lamorde returned to the EFCC as Director of Operations in December 2010, replacing Stephen Otitoju.
After Waziri’s removal on November 23, 2011, Lamorde, then an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was again appointed Acting Chairman. He was confirmed as substantive chairman on February 15, 2012, serving until November 9, 2015, when President Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu in an acting capacity.
