Monster Hunter Wilds has one of the biggest focuses on story in the series’ history. It is what carries you through the vast majority of the experience until the endgame, and the game has some of the most characters and cutscenes yet.
But what is the pacing of the game like, and how many chapters exactly are there? Here is a rundown:
- Chapter 1 – 10 missions
- Chapter 2 – 8 missions
- Chapter 3 – 11 missions
- Chapter 4 – 3 missions
- Chapter 5 – 3 missions
- Chapter 6 – 1 mission
Although there are technically six chapters, the game’s main story only takes place in the first three. The other chapters cover the post-game story, which does build on the main events of the game. However, there are fewer missions overall, and it is less plot heavy. There are still some cutscenes, but you will be spending most of your time leveling up your Hunter Rank. Keep in mind there are spoilers below.

Chapter 1 consists of Desert Trotters, Back to Camp, The Beginning, Village of Whispering Winds, Forest Findings, Forest Findings, The Investigation Continues, A Hunter’s Pride, Pursuit of Solitude, and Beyond The Deluge.
In these missions, you will fight everything from a Chatacabra to a Balahara, Lala Barina, and Doshaguma.

Chapter 2 consists of the following missions: A Looming Shadow, Toward Fervent Fields, An Unforseeen Storm, The Eye of the Storm, A Desolate Destination, Hopes of Home, A Disquieting Dawn, Long Forgotten Flame. This chapter takes place in and around the Oilwell Basin featuring Rey Day, Ajarakan, and Nu Udra to name a few monsters.

Chapter 3 closes off the main story and consists of: Born From The Flame, The Faithful Keepers, Indomitable Spirit, Nothing Frozen, Nothing Gained, Through The Dusk, A Path Forward, Full Circle, Dawn Breaks, Broken Chains, Visions of Hope, and Monster Hunter. This takes you into the Ruins of Wyveria, finally facing off against Arkveld and encountering various other Guardian monsters on the way.

Chapter 4 takes you around the revamped ecosystems facing off against a Frenzied Nerscylla, a Yian Kut-Ku, and your first Tempered monster. These missions are: New Ecosystems, Lurking Shadows, and Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns.

Chapter 5 continues introducing endgame threats like the true form of Jin Dahaad and has you revisit three locales to face off against apex pedators. These missions are: Storm Vold Vortex, A World Turned Upside Down, and A Break In The Clouds.

Finally, Chapter 6 has you facing off against Arkveld, who managed to find a way to persist and survive in the Forbidden Lands. This mission is called What Lies Ahead.
