The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the immediate commencement of disciplinary procedures against a group of police officers involved in extorting motorists along the Benin bypass.
The order was given after the six implicated officers, along with their supervising officer—a Chief Superintendent of Police—were brought before the IGP. Their actions were captured in a video that recently went viral, sparking public outrage.
Describing the incident as a disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Egbetokun did not mince words.
“Their behavior is shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable. It betrays the core values of the Force and will not be condoned,” he declared.
According to a statement released on the Nigeria Police Force’s verified Facebook page, the officers have been formally queried, and orderly room trials have commenced for the Inspectors featured in the video.
The Force emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on extortion and unprofessional conduct, reaffirming its commitment to rooting out misconduct.
“We are determined to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability at all levels. Misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated under any guise,” the statement read.
The Police assured Nigerians that the officers involved will face appropriate sanctions in line with established disciplinary procedures.
