ABUJA — Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has described ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as a “decent but inexperienced” leader, attributing his shortcomings in office to a lack of experience.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Atiku said Jonathan’s inexperience significantly affected his ability to effectively manage the country, ultimately contributing to his defeat in the 2015 presidential election.
“I know Goodluck Jonathan very well; he is a decent young man but also inexperienced, which contributed to his failure to manage the affairs of the country,” Atiku said.
The former vice president stressed the need for experienced and capable leadership in Nigeria, arguing that governance at the highest level requires a deep understanding of the country’s complexities.
Atiku, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also revealed that the 2027 presidential election would mark his final attempt at the nation’s top office.
According to him, the declaration raises the stakes of his ambition. “This is my last shot, so it is a high-stakes contest for me,” he said.
Positioning himself as a bridge between generations, Atiku added that he represents both the past and the future of Nigeria. He argued that while younger leaders are eager to take charge, many have yet to meet expectations and would benefit from the guidance of more experienced figures.
“The younger generation needs mentorship and tutelage. Experience still matters in leadership,” he added.
