Labour Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) Assumes Control, Dismisses Anambra Convention as Illegitimate

In response to the conclusion of Julius Abure’s tenure as the head of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the Board of Trustees (BoT) has intervened to oversee the party’s affairs. The BoT, led by Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor, criticized the recent secret national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, labeling it a sham.

The BoT emphasized the need to prevent a leadership vacuum within the Labour Party and announced plans to organize an all-encompassing National Convention. This decision aligns with a Federal High Court judgment and a previous agreement mediated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Contrary to the recent convention, characterized as exclusionary and lacking transparency, the upcoming National Convention will prioritize inclusivity and democratic principles, starting with grassroots congresses. The BoT also commended key party figures, including Peter Obi, for their refusal to endorse the flawed proceedings in Nnewi.

The controversial convention in Nnewi saw Julius Abure’s reelection as National Chairman, despite objections from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and allegations of financial impropriety. The absence of key stakeholders further undermined the legitimacy of the event, prompting criticism and challenges to its validity.

Moving forward, the BoT reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising the Labour Party and restoring its role as a vehicle for societal progress and empowerment.
