Obisia Nwankpa, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated boxing icons, has passed away. Fondly known as “Golden Gloves,” the legendary boxer and coach died in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, at the age of 75.
Nwankpa rose to prominence in the 1970s and remained a dominant force through the 1980s and 1990s, making his mark in the Light and Light Welterweight divisions. He held multiple titles during his illustrious career, including the Nigerian Lightweight title, the African Boxing Union Light Welterweight title, and the Commonwealth title.
Beyond his achievements in the ring, Nwankpa also contributed immensely to the sport as a coach, nurturing the next generation of Nigerian boxing talents.
His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian sports, and tributes have begun to pour in from across the boxing world and beyond.
