Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed yet again on Saturday, marking the third failure within a week and plunging the nation into widespread outages. The collapse occurred at 8:16 a.m., reducing power generation to zero, further exacerbating the energy crisis faced by the country.
This latest incident follows two previous grid collapses on Monday and Tuesday, during attempts to restore the system. The national grid is a complex infrastructure that connects generating plants, transmission networks, and distribution companies. A collapse typically happens due to technical faults, insufficient generation, transmission challenges, or an overloaded system.
Before the collapse on Saturday, the grid was generating 3,042 megawatts at 8 a.m., down from a peak of 3,968MW recorded just an hour earlier. However, by the time of the breakdown, power allocation to distribution companies had dropped to 0.00MW.
Authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive explanation for the repeated collapses, leaving Nigerians frustrated with the erratic power supply.
