Outrage in Abuja as Police Launch Probe into Teen Maid Abuse…
Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was gripped with outrage this week after a disturbing video surfaced online showing a severely injured teenage maid, prompting swift action from authorities.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Adewale Ajao, has ordered the immediate arrest of a woman alleged to have abused 14-year-old Bashariya, a domestic worker from Zamfara State. The video, which quickly went viral, revealed harrowing images of the girl’s injuries, sparking widespread condemnation on social media and calls for justice.
“No child should suffer like this,” CP Ajao said in a statement released on Monday. “We are treating this case with the urgency it deserves. The suspect must be brought to book.”
According to preliminary reports, Bashariya was allegedly starved and subjected to physical abuse in the home where she worked. The full extent of her injuries is still being assessed by medical personnel.
Police say investigations are ongoing and that they are committed to ensuring the safety of all children, particularly those in domestic service. CP Ajao urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of abuse to authorities.
“This case is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children in domestic labor. We will not tolerate such cruelty,” Ajao added.
Child rights advocates have welcomed the swift response but are calling for broader reforms to prevent similar incidents.
“This is not an isolated case. There are thousands of Bashariyas across Nigeria,” said Amina Yusuf, a child protection activist based in Abuja. “It’s time for stronger laws and real enforcement.”
The FCT Police Command has reiterated its commitment to justice and is encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
