The Nigerian Army has officially renamed Ikeja Cantonment as T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja, in tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
The renaming recognizes Lagbaja’s courage, dedication, and patriotism. The ceremony, held at the cantonment, was attended by top military officials, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, 9 Brigade Commander Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, and members of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Course 39, Lagbaja’s coursemates.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the renaming and reaffirmed his administration’s support for the Armed Forces. He also encouraged Lagbaja’s widow, Mrs. Mariam Lagbaja, to take pride in her husband’s legacy as a true leader.
The event coincided with the unveiling of major facility upgrades, including a striking portrait of Lagbaja made from over 400,000 half-inch nails at the refurbished digital gate. Other renovations include:
Remodelled accommodation for the Commander of 9 Brigade
A newly built residence for the Commander of 70 Supply and Transport Command
Renovated quarters for Corporals and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs)
The renaming of the cantonment stands as a lasting tribute to Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s service and sacrifice.
