Sanusi Lamido to Return as Emir of Kano…
Barring any last-minute delays or changes, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is set to return as the Emir of Kano, POLITICS NIGERIA has learned.
This development follows the Kano State House of Assembly’s resolution on Thursday to dethrone the current Emirs and dismantle the four new Emirates in the State, which were established under a controversial 2019 law.
Sanusi is expected to arrive in Kano on Friday.Sanusi was previously dethroned as Emir of Kano by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The creation of the new emirates was widely seen as a political maneuver to diminish the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council and reduce Sanusi’s influence in the state.
“The bill has been sent to the governor for assent,” said Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, who sponsored the amendment bill. “Now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates: Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.”
He added, “The law now provides the governor the authority to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.”
