In a bold move to curb government spending, President Bola Tinubu has issued new directives limiting the number of vehicles and security personnel assigned to Ministers, Ministers of State, and Heads of Federal Agencies.
Under the new guidelines, officials are restricted to a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys.
“No additional vehicles will be provided for movement,” the President’s statement clarified.
This is the latest in a series of cost-reduction efforts by President Tinubu. Earlier this year, in January, he trimmed his foreign travel entourage from 50 to 20 officials and reduced his local entourage to 25. Similarly, the Vice President’s team was cut down to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for local engagements.
In addition to convoy restrictions, the new directive limits each official to a security detail of no more than five personnel, consisting of four police officers and one officer from the Department of State Services (DSS). “No extra security personnel will be assigned beyond this,” the President ordered.
To enforce these measures further, President Tinubu has tasked the National Security Adviser with working alongside the Military, Paramilitary, and other security agencies to review and reduce their vehicle and personnel deployments where necessary.
“All affected officials must comply with these measures immediately,” the statement emphasized, reflecting the urgency and seriousness of the cost-cutting initiative.
This statement was signed and issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), on October 24, 2024.
