The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that two suspected kidnappers were killed during a rescue operation that secured the release of relatives of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The victims — Adelabu’s younger sister, Olaide John-Paul, and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul — were rescued unharmed during a late-night operation conducted by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the operation took place around 7:30 p.m., three days after the victims were abducted while on their way to school.

Placid said the rescue followed extensive intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts that enabled security operatives to track the kidnappers and confront them.

“The rescue was achieved through sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance, and tactical operations. These efforts enabled investigators to track the kidnappers’ movements, resulting in a confrontation with FID-IRT operatives.

“During the confrontation, two suspected kidnappers were fatally wounded, and two rifles were recovered. The victims were rescued unharmed and are now in safe custody, receiving medical care and support,” he stated.

The Inspector-General of Police also commended the tactical team for its professionalism and determination in ensuring the safe release of the hostages.

Placid noted that the IGP praised the operatives’ “resilience and commitment,” describing their efforts as instrumental to the successful outcome of the mission.

He added that security agencies have intensified operations to apprehend other members of the kidnapping syndicate who escaped during the encounter.

“Operations are ongoing to track, arrest, and bring all involved to justice,” Placid said.

Police intelligence indicates that some fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation.

John-Paul and her children were abducted on June 3 while travelling to school in Ibadan. The kidnappers reportedly trailed the family from their residence before intercepting their vehicle and whisking them away.
