Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries scheduled for Thursday, May 21, ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.

In a personally signed statement issued on Wednesday, Fubara said his decision came after “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and political associates.

The governor explained that he chose to step aside in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State, stressing that leadership demands sacrifice.

“There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual,” he stated.

Fubara acknowledged the disappointment his supporters may feel, thanking them for their loyalty, prayers, and sacrifices throughout his political journey.

“I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way,” he said.

The governor also revealed that his recent silence on political developments in the state was intentional and guided by the broader interest of Rivers people.

“My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic, guided always by the higher interest of our state and our people,” he added.

While hinting at mounting political pressure behind the scenes, Fubara said some matters were better handled quietly to preserve peace.

“Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he declared.

The governor maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or surrender.

“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” Fubara said.

He further pledged continued support for the APC and whoever emerges as the party’s candidate, while appreciating the party leadership and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their encouragement and support.

Fubara urged party faithful to remain united ahead of the governorship election, describing the APC as “our collective home.”
