The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down stiff sanctions to Senegal and Morocco following incidents of misconduct involving fans, players and officials during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
In a statement issued after its disciplinary review, CAF announced a total fine of $615,000 against Senegal for crowd disturbances and players’ misconduct during the high-profile final. Morocco were also fined $315,000 for infractions linked to the conduct of stadium officials, players and team staff, as well as the use of laser pointers inside the stadium.
“After a thorough examination of reports submitted by match officials and security personnel, the CAF Disciplinary Board has determined that several breaches of its regulations occurred during the AFCON final,” the statement said.
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was separately sanctioned, receiving a $100,000 fine and a five-match suspension for misconduct deemed contrary to CAF’s code of conduct.
Two Senegalese players, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, were each handed two-match suspensions in CAF competitions for their roles in the incidents.
Morocco also saw key players punished. Star defender Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two CAF matches for unsporting behaviour, while Ismael Saibari was fined $100,000 and banned for three CAF games.
CAF stressed that the sanctions were intended to deter future misconduct and uphold discipline at its competitions. “CAF remains committed to preserving the integrity of African football and ensuring that players, officials and supporters adhere strictly to the rules of the game,” the governing body added.
The bans will take immediate effect across CAF-sanctioned competitions.
