Residents of a fast-growing community in Lugbe, Abuja, are celebrating a major breakthrough in their electricity supply following the installation of a new transformer by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.
For nearly three years, the community endured persistent power outages caused by an overloaded transformer shared with two neighbouring areas. The situation disrupted daily life and hindered small-scale businesses that depend on stable electricity.
Determined to find a lasting solution, the community’s newly elected leadership prioritised securing a dedicated transformer. However, efforts to self-fund the project quickly proved unfeasible, with estimated costs exceeding ₦35 million.
Acting in line with regulations set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, which assigns responsibility for electricity infrastructure to distribution companies, the community formally petitioned AEDC in January 2026.
In what residents described as a swift and commendable response, AEDC processed the request and, within four months, supplied and installed a brand-new 500KVA transformer—complete with all necessary accessories—at no cost.
“This is a turning point for our community. We can finally look forward to reliable electricity,” a community representative said. “AEDC showed professionalism and transparency throughout the process.”
Another resident added, “For years, we struggled with poor power supply. This intervention has restored hope—not just for households but for small business owners.”
The project is seen as a reflection of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector, emphasizing collaboration between regulatory bodies and service providers. It also aligns with broader national efforts under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve service delivery.
Community members praised AEDC for adhering to due process and encouraged other communities facing similar challenges to engage authorities through the proper channels.
“This shows that when citizens follow the right procedures, government institutions can deliver real results,” a local leader noted.
Residents described the transformer installation not just as an infrastructure upgrade, but as a symbol of effective governance and active civic participation delivering tangible benefits.
