Fresh concerns have emerged over the possible resurgence of the ideology and networks associated with late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau following reports that his biological son, Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau, has surfaced within the ranks of the insurgent group.

Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X, saying Ibn Mohammed is reportedly following in the footsteps of his father.

The development has sparked renewed concerns over the possible continuation of Shekau’s extremist ideology and the networks built during his years as the leader of Boko Haram.

Abubakar Shekau became the leader of Boko Haram following the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf. Under his leadership, the insurgency witnessed some of its most violent periods, with attacks targeting communities, security personnel, government institutions and civilians across Nigeria’s North-East and neighbouring countries.

Shekau was also known for his uncompromising leadership style and frequent use of propaganda videos to issue threats, claim responsibility for attacks and communicate with governments and the public.

His death in 2021, after a confrontation with fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), significantly changed the dynamics of the insurgency in the Lake Chad region.

The reported emergence of his son within Boko Haram ranks has therefore raised questions about whether elements of Shekau’s ideology and influence could persist within the group despite his death.
