The Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has directed that two separate DNA tests be conducted on Liam Aloba, the son of the late Afrobeats singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Presiding magistrate, Adefisoye Sonuga, issued the order on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, while ruling on an application filed by the singer’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, who is seeking clarity on the child’s paternity.

In his application, Aloba urged the court to compel a DNA test on the late singer’s remains at the Military Hospital, Yaba, and to allow a separate test to be carried out abroad at his own expense.

Quoting from the filings, Aloba said: “There is uncertainty surrounding the paternity of Liam, and it is in the best interest of the child that the matter is conclusively determined. This will also help in addressing maintenance obligations and issues concerning his welfare.”

The late Mohbad’s wife, Mrs. Omowunmi Aloba, was listed as respondent in the suit filed under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.

At the hearing, Mr. Augustine Adegbemi appeared for the applicant, while Mr. Kabir Akingbolu represented the respondent. The application was moved without opposition, prompting the magistrate to grant the request.

Delivering the order, Magistrate Sonuga ruled: “The DNA tests shall be conducted in accredited hospitals in Nigeria and abroad. Both parties or their representatives must be present during the sample collection process.”

The matter was adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.

Mohbad, aged 26, died on September 12, 2023, after suffering convulsions at his Lekki residence. He was buried the next day, but following public outcry, his remains were exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy on the orders of the Lagos State Government.

The autopsy, concluded on April 29, 2024, was inconclusive as the internal organs had decomposed. A second autopsy was later ordered by the Coroner in June 2024 after the family requested an independent review.
