by Ezekiel Waheo, Kebbi:

A group of 40 fishermen, armed with bows and arrows, have killed a hippopotamus in the Yauri River, Kebbi State, following orders from the Emir of Yauri, HRH Zayyanu Abdullahi.

The hippo had recently attacked and killed one of the Emir’s workers, prompting the directive to eliminate the animal.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the chairman of Yauri Local Government Area, Hon. Abubakar Shu’aibu Yauri (Abu Manaja), explained that the fishermen acted swiftly on the Emir’s command. “After they received the directive, the fishermen entered the Yauri River and killed the hippopotamus,” he said.

The large animal was then transported to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Kasimu Aliyu, in a large canoe, where a crowd of excited onlookers cheered. “They butchered the animal into pieces and shared the meat with the people,” Yauri added. The chairman also expressed the community’s appreciation for the swift action taken.

“The people of Yauri Emirate are grateful to Governor Idris and the Emir for their decision,” he said, emphasizing the relief and excitement felt throughout the emirate following the successful hunt.
