A gas-laden tanker caught fire on Thursday after the driver reportedly lost control while travelling at high speed along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred near Ola Farm Bus Stop when the tanker struck a road bump, triggering a fire that prompted a swift response from emergency agencies.
Confirming the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olawale Afolabi, said responders quickly brought the situation under control, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings and road users.
“We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The situation has been brought under control, and the fire fully extinguished,” Afolabi said.
According to him, LASEMA personnel worked alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the fire, secure the area, and minimise the risk to residents, businesses and motorists.
Traffic and crowd management were handled by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ikotun Division.
Afolabi disclosed that efforts were ongoing to remove the burnt tanker from the roadway, with heavy-duty recovery equipment deployed to facilitate its evacuation.
He also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, especially speed limits in residential areas and around road bumps.
“We use this opportunity to remind all motorists of the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly around designated bumps and in residential corridors. Such caution saves lives and protects property,” he added.
The LASEMA permanent secretary reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to disaster preparedness, rapid emergency response and public safety, while commending all responding agencies and residents for their cooperation throughout the operation.
