Abuja, 18th October 2024 – Ahead of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council’s upcoming elections, the Make A Difference Initiative (MAD) has called for a fair and transparent process as the union prepares to inaugurate a Credentials Committee on 19th October 2024 to oversee the elections.
The advocacy group, which promotes justice and equity, encouraged journalists in Abuja to set a high standard for the political class by conducting elections that are free from manipulation, conflict, or crisis.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe, MAD Initiative emphasized the need for leadership committed to the collective good of the union, protecting members’ interests, and resisting undue influence from individuals or groups seeking personal gain.
“We urge the current NUJ FCT Chairman, Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen, and his executive team to ensure a conducive environment that allows all aspirants and members to participate freely, without intimidation,” the statement said.
Dr. Ughegbe added, “It is our hope that Osadebamwen will seize this opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by managing the process with transparency, integrity, and a commitment to the union’s core values.”
The group also called on the NUJ National President, Comrade Christopher Ikechukwu Isiguzo, to closely monitor the election process and provide guidance to the FCT Council leadership if needed.
Concluding its statement, MAD Initiative expressed optimism for a smooth, peaceful transition that reflects the true will of the union’s members.
The NUJ FCT Council election is widely viewed as a crucial moment for journalists in the nation’s capital to showcase that credible elections are achievable, even in difficult environments.
