The Lagos State government has made a startling discovery beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in the upscale area of Ikoyi, where tenants allegedly pay N250,000 per annum for a single room. According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, a total of 86 partitioned rooms, ranging from 10×10 to 12×10 in size, were found under the bridge.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab disclosed, “A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphine Estate bridge. They have all been removed by the enforcement team of Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources @LasgMOE.”
Furthermore, Wahab highlighted the arrest of 18 individuals squatting illegally under the bridge by officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI. He added that the illegal structures were dismantled promptly.
Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, a special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, corroborated the eviction, attributing it to environmental infractions and unlawful settlement. Rotimi-Akodu stated, “Squatters dwelling under the bridge leading from inward Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi were evicted today Tuesday, 30th of April, 2024 by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps LAGESC (aka KAI).”
He further emphasized the arrest of 23 individuals during the eviction process and pledged continued monitoring of the area to prevent further violations. Rotimi-Akodu concluded by affirming that the law would be enforced to address such encroachments, stating, “The law will take its course.”
