The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Friday Onu after a viral video captured him viciously assaulting a female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025, near the Oriental Hotel area. According to the police, Onu was caught trying to steal the car battery from Amole’s vehicle when she confronted him—leading to a violent attack.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, condemned the assault and confirmed the arrest.
“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on social media, depicting the assault of one Yetunde Amole by a suspected thug near the Oriental Hotel area in Lagos. The command condemns this act in the strongest terms and wishes to update the public on the actions already taken,” Hundeyin stated.
He further explained that Onu was swiftly apprehended by officers from the Maroko Division shortly after the incident. However, while in custody, the suspect reportedly fell ill and was transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under close watch.
“Preparations for his arraignment were underway when he suddenly took ill. The suspect will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as police medical professionals declare him fit to stand trial,” the statement continued.
Hundeyin assured the public that justice will be served and praised Amole for her courage.
“We commend Ms. Amole for her bravery and assure her, and all victims of crime, that their cases will be thoroughly pursued to ensure justice is served in all cases,” he said.
Amole, visibly distressed, recounted the ordeal in a now-viral video. Speaking through tears with bruises on her face, she described how the suspect posed as a passenger near the Oriental Hotel, claiming he was headed to the Nigerian Law School.
“I noticed him through my rear-view mirror while he was trying to remove my battery,” she recalled. “When I confronted him, he started beating me, tore my clothes, and dragged me out of the car in broad daylight. People were just watching.”
The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while also reiterating their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
