Desmims Broadcast Nigeria (DITV), Nigeria’s first private television station, and Alheri Radio, the oldest private radio station in Northern Nigeria, have suspended operations due to severe economic pressures.
In a statement issued over the weekend in Kaduna, Idris Mustapha, Acting General Manager and Chairman of the Management Committee, explained the decision, citing unsustainable operating costs driven by the escalating price of power.
“The escalating cost of power has made it impossible to operate the station effectively,” Mustapha stated. “This, coupled with harsh economic conditions, has placed an unprecedented financial strain on our operations.”
The statement also highlighted a decline in revenue, as several businesses that previously supported the station have been unable to fulfill their financial commitments.
The suspension of DITV and Alheri Radio, both of which cater to a vast Hausa-speaking audience, underscores the growing economic challenges faced by Nigeria’s media industry. “This is a difficult decision for us, but one we had to make to ensure the long-term viability of the stations,” Mustapha added.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience this will cause to our millions of loyal viewers and listeners. We remain committed to resuming normal operations as soon as the financial situation improves.”
The move marks a critical moment in Nigeria’s media landscape, as DITV and Alheri Radio have long been cornerstones of news, entertainment, and cultural programming in the region. Their temporary closure is a stark reflection of the broader economic difficulties impacting businesses across the country.
Listeners and viewers have expressed disappointment, with many hoping for a swift resolution to the challenges and the return of their beloved stations.
