Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied rumors that he agreed to a deal to serve as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections. In a statement on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), Obi addressed the backlash following his interview with News Central TV.
He clarified that his remarks had been misconstrued by “fifth columnists” and reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party. “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV,” Obi said. “Some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.” Obi emphasized that his primary concern is addressing Nigeria’s current challenges, not pursuing personal ambitions for 2027.
“I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges,” he added.
He further explained his openness to collaboration, provided it is based on shared values. “I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture.
“Contrary to reports, Obi affirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and stated that any potential collaboration must be transparent. He stressed, “If anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions.”
Obi also dispelled any notion of desperation for political office, saying, “I am not desperate to become president or for any position… I believe I can make contributions as I am already doing without occupying any.”
Addressing the misinterpretation of his words, Obi concluded, “For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast.”
