President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately unfreeze the Osun State Government account, days after the anti-graft agency placed a freeze order on the account ahead of the state’s gubernatorial election.
The directive was disclosed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said President Tinubu personally informed Governor Ademola Adeleke of the decision during a phone conversation on Thursday.
“President Tinubu, in a telephone conversation with the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday, informed the Governor of his order to the EFCC to unfreeze the account of the Osun State Government,” Onanuga said, adding that the President acted in the interest of electoral fairness.
The EFCC had earlier in the week frozen the state’s account just days to the governorship election, a move that drew sharp criticism from Nigerians who described it as politically motivated, even as the commission maintained it was acting within its legal powers.
President Tinubu’s intervention has been widely welcomed as a step toward ensuring a level playing field ahead of the poll, with observers describing the reversal as a positive signal for electoral fairness in the state.
