Transparency International (TI) and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have revealed that Nigeria has seen advancements on the global corruption perception index.

During the official launch of the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023 in Abuja, Executive Director of CISLAC/Transparency International Nigeria, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), highlighted the nation’s progress. Rafsanjani stated, “Nigeria recorded an improved ranking, moving up five places to rank 145 out of 180 countries assessed. This marks a positive shift from its previous 150th position.” He added, “Nigeria also attained a score of 25 out of 100 maximum points in the 2023 CPI results, compared to 150 on the 2022 CPI results.”

However, Rafsanjani noted that Nigeria’s score remains below the Sub-Saharan African average of 33 points, with most African countries stagnating. “Ninety percent of countries in sub-Saharan Africa scored under 50,” he emphasized.

Explaining the factors behind Nigeria’s improvement, Rafsanjani highlighted the launch of the Beneficial Ownership Register and the active role of the media, civil society, and citizens in demanding transparency and accountability. He also pointed out the arrests and recoveries made by anti-corruption agencies, which contributed to the positive shift in the corruption perception index.
