In a significant development on Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the decision to suspend Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with immediate effect.

The announcement of the suspension was conveyed in a statement issued by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The statement cited an ongoing investigation of the CBN Governor’s office and emphasized the imperative of implementing reforms in the country’s financial sector.

It read, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect. This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

Furthermore, the statement directed Emefiele to promptly hand over his responsibilities to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will serve as the Acting Central Bank Governor until the conclusion of the investigation and implementation of the intended reforms.

This unexpected move by President Tinubu signifies a decisive step towards addressing the issues within the financial sector and underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering positive changes in Nigeria’s economy.
