The Federal Government has raised alarm over imminent flooding in the Niger Delta and southern states, urging local authorities and citizens to prepare for potential disasters as water levels continue to rise.
Engineer Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, issued the warning while addressing recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, clarifying that the disaster was caused by the Ngadda River overflowing its banks, rather than a collapse of the Alau Dam.
“The flooding in Maiduguri was due to heavy inflows from the Ngadda River, leading to a breach in the dam’s dyke, not a structural failure of the Alau Dam,” Utsev explained.
He stressed that the Alau Dam needs a comprehensive upgrade, warning against negligence by contractors or officials. “We cannot tolerate substandard performance when lives and livelihoods are at stake,” he added.
Utsev expressed concern about the Niger Delta and southern regions, stating that the water levels in the Niger and Benue rivers are showing a significant rise. “The daily flow on these rivers is alarming, and we are now moving towards a RED alert. We must take urgent action to mitigate the impact,” he said.
In response to criticisms about the Ministry’s delayed visit to the flood-stricken areas in Maiduguri, the minister cited prior engagements with irrigation inspections in the South West but assured that immediate repairs to the Alau Dam are now a top priority.
“The Federal Government stands with the people of Borno State in these difficult times and is working closely with state officials to provide much-needed relief, including sanitation kits and water treatment facilities for the displaced,” Utsev concluded.
