The death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity has reportedly triggered a bitter power struggle among armed bandit groups in Katsina State, forcing a suspected commander linked to the incident, Kachalla Muhammadu, into hiding.

Security sources and local reports indicate that Muhammadu is now being hunted not only by security agencies but also by rival bandit factions following the alleged declaration by notorious kingpin Ado Aleru that he should be captured.

The development has escalated tensions within the criminal networks operating across Katsina, with the forests of Matazu and Musawa emerging as the centre of a fierce manhunt. Fighters loyal to Ado Aleru are said to be pursuing Muhammadu and his associates, turning internal disagreements among the bandits into an open confrontation.

Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), a former Director of Defence Information of the Nigerian Armed Forces, reportedly died while in captivity after he and his wife were abducted in Katsina State. His death sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against criminal groups operating in the region.

The rivalry between the factions has reportedly led to clashes along forest routes and hideouts, with some affected communities experiencing a temporary reduction in attacks as the rival groups focus on fighting one another.

Security analysts, however, caution that such internal conflicts among criminal groups do not necessarily translate into lasting peace. While the divisions may weaken the operational strength of the bandits, they warn that the groups could eventually regroup if security forces fail to sustain pressure.

Observers say the current crisis presents a strategic opportunity for the military and other security agencies to intensify operations against bandit camps, disrupt supply networks, and dismantle the structures that have fuelled years of violence and insecurity in parts of the North-West.

As residents continue to hope for lasting peace, there are growing calls for coordinated security operations to ensure that the ongoing feud among the bandit factions does not evolve into another cycle of violence that ultimately affects innocent communities.
