In a shocking development on Tuesday, severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has led to a prison break at the city’s Custodial facility.
An unconfirmed number of inmates have escaped after the rising floodwaters caused extensive damage to the correctional center.
The floodwaters breached the prison’s security barriers and weakened key structural supports, enabling the inmates to escape. “The water level rose so high, it broke through the walls and fences, making it impossible to contain the situation,” a source within the facility stated.
Authorities have confirmed that many of the escapees are considered highly dangerous and could be armed. “These are not just any prisoners,” an official warned. “Some of the inmates who fled pose a serious threat to public safety, especially in a state already dealing with insurgency.
“In response, law enforcement agencies have launched a massive manhunt to track down and recapture the fugitives.
“We are mobilizing all necessary resources to ensure these criminals are brought back into custody,” the police commissioner said, urging residents to remain vigilant.
