The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, has taken decisive steps to ensure the fair treatment of protesters involved in the #EndBadGovernance movement.
In a recent directive, Osigwe ordered NBA branches to closely monitor the ongoing trials of protesters and launched a Pro Bono initiative to provide legal support to those without representation.
To coordinate efforts, the NBA Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) has been tasked with working in collaboration with branch Chairmen and Human Rights Committees in regions where trials are underway. This initiative aims to prevent any miscarriage of justice and ensure that defendants’ rights are upheld.
“We remain committed to ensuring that these trials adhere strictly to due process,” said Osigwe. “NBA legal teams are present in courts to ensure that the rule of law prevails, the human rights of defendants are protected, and justice is served.”
This move reaffirms the NBA’s dedication to safeguarding the legal rights of Nigerian citizens, particularly those engaged in social justice movements.
