The Grace Ike-led Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has distributed over 600 bags of rice to its members as part of efforts to support their welfare during the festive season.
The distribution, held at the NUJ FCT Secretariat, was marked by a lively atmosphere as journalists gathered to receive their share.
Members exchanged warm pleasantries, reflecting the joy and unity of the Christmas season. Many expressed their gratitude for the initiative, describing it as a timely gesture that reinforced the union’s commitment to its members’ well-being.
Speaking at the event, NUJ FCT Chairperson Grace Ike explained the motivation behind the initiative. “We have begun distributing rice to our members as part of the yuletide celebration,” she said.
“Christmas is a time to honour the birth of Jesus Christ and promote peaceful coexistence, love, and unity. This initiative reflects our oath of allegiance and our resolve to foster joy and unity among NUJ FCT Council members.”
Ike highlighted the unprecedented nature of the gesture in the council’s history, assuring members that this was just the beginning of many welfare-driven initiatives.
“We are reaching over 600 members using the last congress register as the basis for distribution,” she noted. “This approach encourages participation in the union and reminds members that the union truly belongs to them.”
She also emphasised the council’s commitment to transparency and efficiency. “This is only the first batch, and we plan to roll out a second batch in January,” Ike revealed. “We are fully committed to accountability, efficiency, and transparency in all our operations.” Reflecting on her administration’s first few weeks in office, Ike described the challenges faced and their determination to deliver results.
“Despite being in office for less than a month and without a formal handover or resources, we hit the ground running. Our passion for humanity and dedication to service has been our driving force,” she said. “We are committed to selfless service, humility, and improving the welfare of our members.”
Chapel leaders commended the Grace Ike-led administration for its bold and unprecedented initiative.
A representative speaking on behalf of the chapels said, “This welfare gesture has strengthened our confidence in the current leadership. It demonstrates a genuine commitment to the well-being of members and sets a new benchmark for leadership in the NUJ FCT Council. We are deeply appreciative of this thoughtful and impactful gesture.”
The initiative underscores the NUJ FCT Council’s focus on fostering unity and improving members’ welfare, setting a standard for welfare-driven leadership in the union.
