The Delta State Police Command has transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action following the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Ogidi was reportedly arrested while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition before the fatal shooting occurred.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, SP Bright Edafe, said the officer would face disciplinary proceedings and possible prosecution.
“The officer responsible has been transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” Edafe stated.
According to the Command, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command received credible intelligence from members of the public concerning the suspect.
Police operatives were subsequently deployed to apprehend the suspect. However, ASP Usman, who led the operation, allegedly violated established police procedures during the arrest.
The police statement explained:
“Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
The Command disclosed that upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State immediately ordered the officer’s arrest. Authorities added that the ASP had since been formally queried before his transfer to Abuja for further disciplinary measures.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and accountability, the Delta State Police Command stressed that respect for human rights remains a core principle of its operations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the killing and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
He assured the family that the Command would ensure justice is served.
The police boss also appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring the public that all necessary steps were being taken to guarantee accountability and justice in the matter.
