In a recent press briefing and statement by the Bassa Cultural & Development Union (BCDU) of Nasarawa State on April 24th, 2024, the Bassa community of Toto LGA vehemently refuted claims made by the Nasarawa State Government regarding the existence of militias or vigilante groups among them.

The statement, addressed to His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, called for urgent intervention to facilitate the safe return of the Bassa people who have been in forced exile for six years.

The Bassa community expressed dismay over the recent accusations by the State Government, asserting that no such militia or vigilante groups exist within their community. They attributed the allegations to misinformation and urged for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the Bassas and their neighbors, the Egburas.

The group highlighted recent clashes in Katakpa and Shegye villages, attributing them to reprisal attacks following the destruction of Bassa camps in Angbara. The Bassa community also raised concerns about the disproportionate response of security forces, alleging bias in favor of the Egburas.

Furthermore, the BCDU commended the Nasarawa State Government for initiating a High Powered Committee to address the longstanding conflict and called for immediate action to facilitate the return of displaced persons, including the rebuilding of destroyed homes and adequate compensation.

The group also tabled series of recommendations during the briefing, which includes the disbandment of vigilante groups, political inclusion of Bassa people, and lifting of employment embargoes. Additionally, they called upon international organizations and the refugee commission for assistance.

Concluding, Mr. Mark Jere, Vice Chairman of the Bassa Cultural and Development Union Nasarawa State Chapter, reiterated the community’s commitment to peace and cooperation while urging for swift government intervention to address their grievances and facilitate their return home.
